Walking In Hazelwood II

It has been far too long, but I am finally posting the second part of "Walking in Hazelwood." One week after the first pictures were taken, I again brought my camera in to work, for the walk to the garden (I think the date was Aug. 19th). We were celebrating our 'End of the Summer,' and I let the kids share my camera, taking pictures of whatever they wanted. Many pictures were taken of each other, yet there were many that captured the essence of what they saw as we walked through the neighborhood. I had to narrow down this post from almost 200 pictures, and I won't lie; these are my personal favorites. Maybe one day, I will have the kids pick their favorites from this same set, and write a paragraph explaining why. But for now, I will just let you look. All of these pictures were taken by children between the ages of 9 and 12. It kind of makes you want to be a kid again. Well, at least you can see the world through a kid's eyes...

Walking in Hazelwood

As a camp counciler at the YMCA, I walk with a group of 15 to 20 kids from our facility to the Library on 2nd Ave., and then on to the Hazelwood Harvest Urban Garden on Ladora Way every Wed. morning. Each week, we walk past empty buildings, and step over broken bottles. Each week we see what can only be called urban decay. But within that, there is beauty everywhere. This past week, I brought my camera, and took lots of pictures. The kids in my group kept asking, "What are you taking a picture of that for?" And I kept answering the same way. "Because I want to." I am going to post some of those photos right here. Next week, as we go to the garden, I will bring my camera again. This time, however, I am going to let the kids take pictures of whatever they want. Because they want to. And I will post them, too...

Hazelwood’s first annual Youth Voices Poetry Slam
-To be held at the Hazelwood YMCA, 4713 Chatsworth Ave.
Thursday, Aug. 13th 2009 @ 7pm.
-Admission is Free, and all ages are welcome.
-Sponsored in part by the YMCA of Hazelwood, the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh- Hazelwood, and Hip Hop on L.O.C.K.
-There will be live performances by Hip Hop on L.O.C.K., poetry written and performed by local youth, a DJ and Art.
-Refreshments will be served to children under the age of 18.
